Renovating on a Budget

Prioritize

If you are on a budget, chances are you won’t be able to fix everything at once. Make a list of everything you want to renovate. Split it up into smaller tasks. For example, instead of writing “Renovate the kitchen,” you could write “Change kitchen tiling,” “Refresh cabinets” and “Change counter.” Once you have listed everything, put them in order of priority, starting with the most urgent. If your roof is leaking, it probably should be number one on your list.

Evaluate

Try to evaluate approximately how much each repair will cost you. Compare prices. Shop online. Go to warehouses and liquidation outlets. You can find construction materials at a fraction of the price. If you are a do-it-yourself person, you will save on labour. If you need a particular piece of equipment, rent it instead of buying it.

Financing

Now comes the time of financing. Depending on the amount needed for a particular repair, there are different funding options that you could use. You could ask your bank for a loan, use a credit card or a line of credit. Another good choice would be an online personal loan. You can borrow smaller amounts, and pay them off within three months. You don’t even need to have good credit to make an online personal loan. The important thing is to get financing that will not put your head in a noose. The payments should easily fit in your budget. Moreover, do not accumulate debts. Make one repair, pay it off, then start on the next one.

One step at a time

Once the urgent repairs are done and paid for, go at it one step at a time. You might want to start by renovating one room completely. Do the repairs gradually. Once that room is done, go to the next one. Here is a tip: if you are planning to change the baseboards around the house, you might want to consider buying them all at the same time. If you buy them one room at a time, you are taking the chance of not finding the same model, especially if you are buying them at a liquidation outlet. Also, kitchens and bathrooms always cost more to renovate. You might want to start with the living room and the bedrooms. They will be done in a lot less time.

Keep it simple

Sometimes all a room needs for a brand-new look is a fresh coat of paint. Instead of changing your cabinets, why not just put some mouldings on them to upgrade the style and paint them. Replacing the knobs and handles can also go a long way. Be creative. Accessorize. Adding a pillow here or a throw there can transform your living room completely.

With patience and a little elbow grease, you can do marvels with your home.
