What to do if you have lost your job

Luckily, there are a number of different ways to deal with being suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed.

Employment insurance

The government offers support to unemployed workers through the Employment Insurance program. Basically, this program provides benefits to people who have recently lost their job. To be eligible, a person must have lost their job through no fault of their own, and they must be able to work.

Employment insurance will provide them with regular benefits until they can find another job. To be assured of benefits, the unemployed applicant must file their claim for Employment Insurance within four weeks of the last day of their employment. The best strategy is to submit the paperwork for benefits as soon as you lose your job.

You must also actively be looking for work during the period when you are unemployed. A government caseworker may ask to see documentation of this. You should keep a written record of the employers you have contacted in order to prove that you are meeting this requirement.

If you quit your job on your own or were fired for misconduct, you are not eligible for employment insurance. However, if you are self-employed, work in the fishing industry, or need leave to care for a child or other family member, then you could be eligible for benefits through a different program.

Finding a new job

The government also offers assistance to job seekers. They operate a nationwide job bank and also list public service job opportunities and point job seekers to federal hiring programs. You can find these opportunities by visiting the national job bank website. While there, you can sign up for job alerts. You will automatically be contacted when an employer posts a job that fits with your skills.

What if you have a job, but you still need money to get back on track financially? An online personal loan can be the answer. To apply for these loans, you need a pay stub and bank statement. After you start working, you can get back on track financially by applying for a loan and then using your next chec to pay it off. This way, you can get back to your normal “employed lifestyle” as soon as you have a job and couple of pay cheques under your belt.
