Summer is synonymous with vacation, spending time with friends and having fun. How can that work out with social distancing?
Here are seven fun activities you can do while social distancing, which won’t make a hole in your budget.
Whichever activity you do, make sure to always respect the social distancing directives of your local municipality.
Walking and Hiking
Walking or hiking are two great outdoor activities that are easy to do with friends and family. You can talk while walking, and keep your distances.
Campfire
If you have a fire pit in your backyard, invite some friends over for a campfire. Every family can bring their chairs and a bag of marshmallows. Sitting in a wide circle around the fire gives you the chance to talk together while respecting the 6-foot distance.
Outdoor BBQ Suppers
Invite friends and family over for an outdoor barbecue supper. For extra security measures, every family can bring their food. Use paper plates and set up an outdoor handwashing station with the hose and some hand soap. Everyone can bring their chairs, and you can finish off the evening with a campfire.
Gardening
Gardening is a fun activity that you can do alone or with your immediate family. Take the time to spruce up your flower beds or make a garden. Working the earth and watching those plants grow gives you a sense of accomplishment. Plus, you can enjoy the fruit of your labour once your veggies have grown. The small amount of money you’ll invest in your garden will be worth the while when you don’t have to buy vegetables for the summer. Freeze any extras that you have, and you can enjoy them all year long.
Create a Borrowing Chain
Team up with some trustworthy friends to create a borrowing chain. For example, if you like to read, you probably have friends who are also avid readers. Check with them if they’re willing to lend you some of their books in exchange for some of yours. It gives you more books to pick from, even if the libraries are closed. You can do the same with movies, board games or video games.
Learn Something
Learning doesn’t need to be boring. Is there something that you’re passionate about, or something you’ve always wanted to learn? Is it drawing, painting, playing the guitar, or maybe another language? There are plenty of free apps, classes and tutorials online that you could check out. Use your extra free time to learn something that you love.
Meet Up Online
Video conference with your friends. Talk, play games together. Online games are a great way to meet with friends while really keeping your distances!
Stay Safe
Social distancing doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. As shown in this article, you can still catch up with your friends and family. It might take a little more effort and creativity, but it’s worth it. The important thing is that everybody stays safe.
